Seriously, I’d be grateful if someone would explain this to me.
With no game until Sunday, I have time to ponder the higher things in life. That done, I’ve also got a some time to examine a little further the ‘matchday experience’ at Molineux.Â
I’ve been in all the stands at Molineux at one time or another and broadly I can see the contrasting appeals and ‘charms’ of all – with the exception of the Billy Wright Upper (the demographic of the family area in the lower is obvious, even to a simpleton like me).
The Southbank is great is you want to stand up and shout and perhaps aren’t allergic to a bit of Burberry and aren’t overly distracted if some around you sometimes prefer to watch the opposition supporters more than the game.
The Northbank is great if, well, you’ve sat there forever, if you want to shout a bit (but not as much as those Southbank oiks), and you don’t get too annoyed if someone near you maintains a constant stream of criticism of one or all Wolves players.
The Steve Bull is great if you want a good view and want to shout ‘the Steve Bull’Â occasionally.
The Billy Wright seems to me to be great if you want to pay a premium to sit undisturbed, enjoying a view much like that from the Steve Bull Stand and perhaps prance out at half-time to enjoy the wide open concourses on your way to pick up a prawn sandwich.
What am I missing?

Your talking through your arse mate. I have been sitting in the Billy wright Stand since it was built and I have a great time with other season ticket holders who I have known over the years. Just cos we don’t chant the name of the stand it doesn’t mean we are not passionate. What wide concourses are you on about cos there aint any in the BW stand if you try to get to the toilets at half time it’s a complete waste of time ~ when was the last time you were in the stand?? As I said before you’ talikng through your arse!!!

@no1 @owen: lol
@gaffer: I see. I think I can work out from your reply that the reason you like the stand is the company of other quality wolves supporters and friends. Interesting to understand better – that is why I asked the question after all. I wasn’t very complimentary about any of the stands but it is tongue on cheek as I’m sure you’re aware. I love going to Molineux, i just don’t ‘get’ paying more for the Billy Wright.
Probably last time I was there was probably 3 years ago and I recall it having significantly bigger concourses than other stands – steve bull in particular.

Seems to me that you’ve just answered your question there.

I have been a season ticket holder for circa 15 years with the last 5 in the Billy Wright lower family area with my sons (the ones shown on ESPN during the breaks) and prior to that the Steve Bull stand or John Ireland as it was known then.
I must admit that the family area does appear (maybe incorrectly) to be more spacious to the other stands. The view is excellent and there are pockets of passionate supporters such as myself…but I do wish we had more vocal supporters in general. Even the North bank appear to have lost their voices over the last few years.
Regardless of which stand you’re in…singh your hearts out for the lads!

@asianwolf: thanks for the comments. I’ve thought the Northbank has got a bit quieter in the last few years, but never sure if I’m imaginging it.

Whilst I love ALL wolves fans in ALL parts of the ground, it makes me sick when you get somebody talking about the mighty South Bank. Yes they support and shout the most (mainly how much they hate the A er that lot up the road)if you think the SB are loud, think on because the SB of the 50s make this lot sound like a whisper, also lets not forget that it is the “away” end, the home end being the North bonk, not forgetting – see which empties the fastest at the end of the match!
but at the end of the day…We are Wolves……….

I think one big point that people are forgetting is that the Billy Wright stand isn’t just for fans. It’s where the hospitality is for sponsors.
It’s the main area where Wolves got the Sporting Bet sponsorship negotiations to take place among other things.
And hopefully Steve is negotiating for a Nike or Umbro kit contract in the Billy Wright…

The point of the Billy wright is so we can stay away from tw*ts like you ! Reason I dont go to away games any more. Always seem to be surrounded by drunken morons ! I actually like to watch a game instead of winding up opposition fans.

@Glan Hoddle’s Karma: fair point
@Ray: a few big assumptions there. Johnwolf makes a valid point about antagonism between the stands which I think you’ve successfully demonstrated. Thanks.
@Arron: Thanks for your opinions. Good to know why you choose the Billy Wright to sit in in addition to the fact that it is showcase/main stand – and obviously commemorates a great player. That’s not a reason for me to choose to sit there given the additional cost, but I am interested to know everyone’s views. But I do agree, it really doesn’t matter where you sit as long as you’re a Wolves fan – this isn’t an attack on the people of the Billy Wright Stand (or any other stand) – just a few tongue in cheek remarks and an idle question. Incidentally I edited the opening insult, because I prefer to keep this site civil, or at the very least lighthearted.

I have a sat in the billy wright for 5 years and there is nothing wrong with it. does it really matter where you sitting long as your there shouting for the team who cares. AND the point of the billy wright is if your such a wolves supporter is where fabio capello sat against everton but i take it you was not there! the stand also celebrates one of the greatest players to of ever to put on a wolves shirt!

You’re missing nothing.
The Billy Wright is the stand that subsidises the club’s income by attracting corporate hospitality and higher income, the South Bank and North Bank contributing nothing and the Steve Bull minimal amounts due to the outdated facilities and lack of interest. Wolves couldn’t survive without it.

Good point. I was definitely coming at it from the angle of a supporter choosing where to buy a seat rather than its purpose for the club.
