I went to see Wolves 0-6 thrashing by Southampton yesterday (my report). I didn’t think it was a good result, and it set me thinking about Wolves’ past record against Southampton. This was the fifth time I’d seen the two teams meet, and it’s never been a happy story; the highlight being a dour 0-0 on the opening day of last season at St Mary’s. I have seen Wolves put a total of one goal past Southampton, in a poor 1-4 defeat at home in the premiership season. Both of these results were unusual, in that 2-0 defeats have been a much more consistent theme in recent years.
Looking further back, however, the last time Southampton put six past Wolves, again at Molineux, was in the 1976/77 season in the old second division. In this case, Wolves went on get promoted (as champions). A good omen, after all.
